Dutch income tax return: key deadlines and what to prepare

The income tax return comes around every year, without fail. Yet many entrepreneurs and individuals still end up gathering documents at the last minute — with stress, and missed deductions, as a result.
When is your return due?
The Belastingdienst sets a final filing date each year, usually early May of the year following the tax year. File before 1 April, and you'll typically hear back before 1 July. Need more time? Request an extension — but do it before the regular deadline.
Which documents do you need?
Think annual statements from your employer(s) or benefits agency, an overview of savings and investments, the WOZ property value and mortgage details if you own a home, and — for entrepreneurs — your full-year figures, invoices and business receipts.
Adjusting your provisional assessment pays off
Is your income this year clearly different from what the Belastingdienst expects based on last year? It's worth adjusting your provisional assessment mid-year. That way you avoid both a hefty back-payment and months of overpaying unnecessarily.
What if you're late?
Filing late can lead to a default penalty, which increases if it happens again. Cutting it close to the deadline? Request an extension in time, rather than filing an incomplete or late return.
The deadlines are kept in view, with every document ready in time — so you're never caught off guard.
